TDB Funds Clearsynth for Deuterated Chemical Facility

RR Team, June 13, 2025June 12, 2025

TDB Funds Clearsynth for Deuterated Chemical Facility

In a major leap for India’s chemical innovation, the Technology Development Board (TDB) has extended financial support to Clearsynth Labs Limited. This funding will help set up a dedicated bulk manufacturing facility for deuterated reagents and building blocks—a vital component in advanced research and high-tech applications.

Deuterated Compounds: A Rising Global Demand

Deuterium-based compounds are gaining momentum worldwide. Not only are they essential in pharmaceutical research, but they are also critical in OLED technology, semiconductors, and fiber optics.

Although India has a strong pharmaceutical sector, it still imports most of its deuterated solvents. Consequently, the country remains dependent on foreign suppliers for high-purity, isotope-labelled materials. This project aims to change that.

Bridging the Import Gap

With TDB’s support, Clearsynth will establish an indigenous production facility. This plant is expected to:

  • Reduce India’s import dependency

  • Improve access to specialty chemicals

  • Create export opportunities for local manufacturers

More importantly, it aligns with the goals of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India by fostering innovation and self-reliance.

A Strategic Tie-Up for Sustainability

Furthermore, Clearsynth has entered into a long-term agreement with the Heavy Water Board (HWB) under the Department of Atomic Energy. This ensures a consistent supply of high-quality heavy water—essential for manufacturing deuterated reagents at scale.

As a result, the facility gains a significant competitive edge in terms of both cost and capacity.

Key Advantages of the Project

Thanks to this initiative, India can finally position itself as a global supplier in a high-value niche market. The project offers multiple benefits:

  • Encourages domestic innovation and IP creation

  • Saves valuable foreign exchange

  • Generates high-skilled jobs in R&D and manufacturing

  • Meets rising global demand in a timely and cost-effective manner

Moreover, this project sets the tone for future investments in advanced specialty chemicals.

Voices of Leadership

Shri Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary of TDB, remarked:

“This initiative enables India to capitalize on the rapidly expanding market for deuterated compounds. TDB’s support is crucial in building a world-class facility.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Vijay Ambati, MD & CEO of Clearsynth, shared:

“Creating deuterated solvents that meet global standards is complex and costly. However, with TDB’s assistance, we are confident in our ability to build a competitive, scalable model.”

Unlocking India’s Potential in High-Tech Chemistry

With global demand rising fast, India has a timely opportunity to lead in high-purity, isotope-labelled compounds. The Clearsynth facility is more than just a manufacturing unit—it represents a shift in how India approaches strategic technologies and chemical sovereignty.

Going forward, this initiative will encourage more private players to invest in cutting-edge sectors that were previously import-heavy. It also sets a new benchmark for public-private partnerships in science and technology.
