Tirupati Temple Board Warns Devotees Against Online Scams
Fake Events and Misuse of TTD Logo
TTD officials revealed that scammers are operating both in India and abroad, particularly in the United Kingdom, where an unauthorized event invitation went viral on WhatsApp. The invitation falsely claimed that the ‘Sri Sridevi Bhudevi Sameta Srinivasa Kalyanamahotsavam’ would be held in the UK, complete with the official TTD logo. The board clarified that no such permission was granted and termed the use of its logo “misleading and fraudulent.”
The fake invitation promised free participation but redirected devotees to a QR code that demanded a £566 “service fee.” It further lured devotees by promising TTD Kalyanam Laddu prasadam, silver lockets, turmeric, kumkum, and framed photographs of Lord Venkateswara.
Devotees Cheated Through Online Accommodation Scams
Several devotees have lodged complaints of being tricked by individuals posing as TTD employees. In one instance, a woman searching online for accommodation in Tirupati was duped by a fraudster who claimed to be from TTD’s Srinivasam Complex reception office. After collecting payment and promising free darshan tickets, the accused disappeared, cutting off all communication.
Officials stressed that such scams not only exploit devotees’ faith but also tarnish the reputation of one of India’s most sacred pilgrimage sites.
TTD’s Response and Advisory
The temple board has stated that it is actively investigating these cases and will take strict legal action against individuals and organisations indulging in such activities. Devotees are urged to rely only on official TTD websites and counters for booking accommodation and darshan services.
“We request all devotees to be vigilant and avoid falling prey to fraudulent offers of free darshan or unauthorized religious events. Official information will only be available on the TTD website,” the board said in a statement.
Protecting Devotees from Fraud
TTD has also warned that misuse of its name or logo, especially on invitation cards and online platforms, will not be tolerated. The board has urged devotees to immediately report any suspicious messages, websites, or advertisements. The warning comes as scams have spread across Andhra Pradesh and beyond, taking advantage of the increasing number of devotees traveling to Tirumala post-pandemic.
