On October 15, 2024, Kirti Vardhan Singh, Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest, Climate Change, and External Affairs, visited the zoo to inspect the enclosure of the African elephant, ‘Shankar.’ During his visit, he reviewed the conditions of the space and the care facilities provided for Shankar.
As a result of the Minister’s efforts, Shankar was freed from his chains. Minister Singh personally checked on Shankar’s health and fed him bananas, cucumbers, and sugarcane. He also interacted with the mahouts and the expert team from Vantara, Jamnagar in Gujarat. Shankar appeared healthier and more relaxed compared to his previous state. To keep the elephant mentally and physically stimulated, large toys are being installed in his enclosure, and the Minister took an interest in these, noting they would help keep Shankar active.
Earlier, on October 9, Minister Singh had conducted an initial inspection of the zoo and provided important instructions regarding the improvement of Shankar’s living conditions. A team of experts from the zoo, along with specialists from Vantara, had thoroughly examined the enclosure. Following this, they immediately worked on reducing Shankar’s stress and engaged him in various activities. Within 48 hours, Shankar was freed from his chains, and his stress levels gradually decreased.
The Minister also announced plans to expand the elephant enclosure. The zoo team, along with the Vantara team, is closely monitoring Shankar’s diet, behavior, and overall well-being, resulting in positive changes. To further enhance his environment, toys like tires, mirrors, feeding rollers, and wooden balls are being introduced. Additionally, a gym area is being arranged to keep him engaged.
Singh also mentioned that efforts are underway to find a female African elephant companion for Shankar, with interest being shown by Zimbabwe and Botswana. The necessary formalities are in progress to facilitate this.
