UP’s Largest Green Hydrogen Plant Launched in Gorakhpur

RR Team, August 18, 2025August 18, 2025

In a major step for clean energy, Torrent Group inaugurated Uttar Pradesh’s first green hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur on August 18, 2025. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath presided over the ceremony, highlighting the state’s push for renewable energy and cleaner fuel solutions.

Largest Green Hydrogen and Gas Blending Project

The project, developed jointly by Torrent Power and Torrent Gas, has an annual production capacity of 72,000 tonnes. The green hydrogen produced will be blended with natural gas up to 2% and distributed via Torrent Gas’ city network. This network serves domestic households, CNG stations, and industries in Gorakhpur and surrounding districts.

“This is the first Green Hydrogen plant in UP and the largest Green Hydrogen and Natural Gas blending project in India’s City Gas Distribution sector,” the Torrent Group statement said.

Impact on Households and Industries

Already operating 32 CNG stations, Torrent Gas serves over 12,000 households and 73 commercial units in Gorakhpur, Sant Kabirnagar, and Kushinagar. The plant ensures cleaner energy for kitchens, vehicles, and industrial use. CM Yogi Adityanath highlighted that piped natural gas has improved convenience, safety, and cost savings for residents, particularly homemakers.

Green Hydrogen: A Clean Energy Future

Green hydrogen is produced via water electrolysis using renewable sources like solar, wind, or hydropower. Unlike conventional hydrogen from fossil fuels, it has zero direct carbon emissions. Blending it with natural gas reduces carbon footprints while leveraging existing gas infrastructure, boosting early hydrogen demand.

Supporting India’s Net-Zero Goals

Jinal Mehta, Director of Torrent Group, stated that the plant aligns with India’s Energy Transition and National Green Hydrogen Mission. Blending hydrogen into the city gas grid offers a practical, scalable pathway to achieve the country’s net-zero targets, lowering emissions and encouraging wider adoption in transport and industry.

UP aims for 1 million tonnes of green hydrogen production per year, supported by state policies promoting investment in this sector.

Conclusion

The Gorakhpur green hydrogen plant marks a milestone in sustainable energy for Uttar Pradesh. By directly reaching households, CNG stations, and industries, it demonstrates a practical approach to cleaner fuel adoption and India’s broader climate goals.
