Vice-President Radhakrishnan Honors Atal Vajpayee in Indore

RR Team, December 21, 2025December 22, 2025
Indore: Vice-President of India Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan on Sunday paid rich tributes to Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee, describing him as the architect of a modern, confident and self-reliant India. Addressing the birth centenary celebrations of the former Prime Minister in Indore, the Vice-President said Vajpayee’s life and leadership continue to guide the nation’s democratic and moral compass.

The commemorative event, organised by the Atal Foundation in Madhya Pradesh’s commercial capital, brought together political leaders, administrators and citizens to honour the legacy of one of India’s most respected statesmen. The Vice-President said Vajpayee was not merely an individual but a “mission in himself”, whose unwavering commitment to principles earned him admiration across ideological lines.

Leadership Rooted in Values and Action

Quoting a couplet from the Tamil classic Thirukkural, Shri Radhakrishnan observed that while all human beings are equal by birth, true greatness is achieved through one’s actions. He said Vajpayee embodied this wisdom throughout his life, remaining “Atal” steadfast in his ideals, conduct and service to the nation.

The Vice-President noted that Vajpayee’s contribution went far beyond electoral politics. As a statesman, administrator, parliamentarian and poet, he elevated public discourse with dignity and grace, proving that politics could be principled as well as compassionate. This enduring commitment to ethical governance, he said, is why Vajpayee’s birth anniversary is observed as Good Governance Day.

Belief in Dialogue and Inclusive Development

Recalling his personal interactions, Shri Radhakrishnan said Atal Bihari Vajpayee was always accessible to Members of Parliament and open to constructive suggestions, irrespective of political affiliation. This openness fostered a culture of dialogue and consensus, which remains vital for a diverse democracy like India.

He highlighted Vajpayee’s belief in inclusive development and humane governance, pointing out that decisions taken during his tenure were guided by long-term national interest rather than short-term political gains. The creation of the states of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand was cited as a farsighted move aimed at improving administrative efficiency and grassroots governance.

Nation-Building Through Infrastructure and Security

The Vice-President also underscored Vajpayee’s role as a nation-builder, referring to landmark initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana and the Golden Quadrilateral highway project. These programmes, he said, transformed rural connectivity and strengthened India’s economic backbone.

Referring to the Pokhran nuclear tests of 1998, Shri Radhakrishnan said Vajpayee’s decisive leadership firmly established India as a confident and self-reliant nation on the global stage. He added that Vajpayee’s vision of a strong and secure India is being carried forward under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, particularly through the goal of Viksit Bharat @2047.

Respect for Cultural and Linguistic Diversity

The Vice-President recalled Vajpayee’s deep association with Tamil Nadu, noting his respect for linguistic diversity and cultural plurality. This inclusive outlook, he said, earned Vajpayee admiration that transcended political and ideological boundaries, making him a unifying figure in Indian public life.

Describing Vajpayee as a towering personality who shaped modern India with integrity and intellect, Shri Radhakrishnan said his life reminds the nation that leadership is not about authority alone, but about service, responsibility and accountability to the people.

Tribute to Ahilyabai Holkar and Indore’s Civic Spirit

During his visit, the Vice-President also unveiled a statue of Devi Ahilyabai Holkar at the Daly College premises. Calling her a visionary ruler, he said Ahilyabai Holkar dedicated her life selflessly to the welfare and prosperity of her people and continues to inspire generations.

Congratulating Indore for consistently ranking as India’s cleanest city, Shri Radhakrishnan said the achievement reflects strong civic consciousness and collective responsibility. He noted that such public participation is essential for building a progressive and sustainable urban future.

The event was attended by the Governor of Madhya Pradesh, Shri Mangubhai Patel, Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav, and several other dignitaries. The centenary celebration served as a reminder of Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s enduring legacy and his lasting influence on India’s democratic ethos.
