Vizhinjam Port Expansion Launched to Boost India’s Maritime Power

RR Team, January 24, 2026January 24, 2026
India’s maritime infrastructure witnessed a landmark moment on Saturday as Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shri Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the capacity augmentation works of the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala. The fast-tracked expansion is expected to significantly enhance India’s container transshipment capabilities and strengthen the country’s position in global maritime trade.
The inauguration ceremony was held in Thiruvananthapuram in the presence of Kerala Chief Minister Shri Pinarayi Vijayan, senior officials from the Central and State governments, and representatives of the concessionaire. With this event, construction works for Phases II, III and IV of the port have formally commenced.

Fast-Tracked Expansion to Strengthen Maritime Infrastructure

The Vizhinjam International Seaport expansion is being implemented under a fast-tracked and integrated development programme designed to accelerate India’s port-led growth. The project aims to substantially augment container handling capacity while reducing India’s dependence on foreign transshipment hubs.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal stated that the spectacular progress of Vizhinjam Port reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of unlocking India’s vast maritime potential. He emphasised that strong port infrastructure is crucial for improving logistics efficiency, lowering trade costs and supporting India’s external trade growth.

Impressive Performance Since Phase I Operations

Vizhinjam International Seaport commenced commercial operations of Phase I on December 3, 2024, with a designed capacity of 1 million TEUs. Within a remarkably short period, the port has handled over 1.43 million TEUs, operating at more than 130 per cent of its intended capacity.

The port has already established direct connectivity with major global shipping routes linking Europe, the Americas, Africa and the Far East. This has positioned Vizhinjam as a key national transshipment terminal and a strategic gateway for Indian maritime trade.

Key Features of the Capacity Augmentation Plan

Under the expansion programme, the existing container berth will be extended to create a continuous 2-kilometre-long berth, making it the longest container berth in India. The breakwater will be extended to 3.88 kilometres, enhancing safety and operational efficiency.

Additional container yards will be developed through sea reclamation, while advanced ship-to-shore and yard cranes will be installed. These upgrades will enable the port to handle next-generation container vessels carrying up to 28,000 TEUs.

Massive Capacity and Investment Commitments

Upon completion, Vizhinjam International Seaport will be capable of handling up to five mother vessels simultaneously. The port’s operational throughput capacity is expected to rise to 5.7 million TEUs per annum, significantly boosting India’s transshipment capabilities.

The expansion works are being undertaken under a Supplementary Concession Agreement signed in November 2024 between the Government of Kerala and Adani Vizhinjam Port Private Limited. The agreement advances the project timeline by nearly 17 years, with completion targeted by December 2028.

Aligned with National Maritime Vision

The total investment envisaged for the Vizhinjam International Seaport project is approximately ₹16,000 crore, including around ₹7,398 crore for the expansion phases. The project aligns with national objectives outlined under Maritime Vision 2030 and Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan noted that Vizhinjam currently serves Indian container ports but will evolve into a global transshipment hub connecting Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas once Phase II development is completed.

India’s Emergence as a Global Maritime Hub

With the commencement of capacity augmentation works, Vizhinjam International Seaport is set to play a transformative role in India’s maritime ecosystem. The project is expected to generate employment, attract global shipping lines and support long-term economic growth.

The expansion underscores India’s commitment to building resilient, efficient and globally competitive port infrastructure, reinforcing the nation’s ambitions of becoming a leading maritime power in the coming decades.
