VP Pays Tribute to 1998 Coimbatore Blast Victims

RR Team, February 14, 2026February 14, 2026
New Delhi: Marking the anniversary of the 1998 Coimbatore serial bomb blasts, Vice-President Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan on Saturday paid solemn homage to the victims of the devastating terror attack. Remembering the lives lost on February 14, 1998, he described the tragedy as one of the darkest and most painful chapters in India’s history.
In a message shared on social media, the Vice-President recalled the horrific chain of explosions that rocked Coimbatore during the visit of senior leader Shri L. K. Advani to the city. The coordinated blasts left scores dead and injured, plunging the nation into grief and shock.

A Dark Chapter in National History

The Coimbatore serial bomb blasts of 1998 sent shockwaves across the country. A series of explosions tore through different parts of the city, resulting in widespread destruction and loss of innocent lives. The attack remains etched in public memory as a grim reminder of the menace of terrorism.

Reflecting on that tragic day, Shri Radhakrishnan said the atmosphere of fear, grief and uncertainty that prevailed in Coimbatore continues to linger in his memory. The coordinated nature of the blasts not only targeted lives but also sought to disrupt communal harmony and national unity.

A Personal Recollection of Survival

In an emotional recollection, the Vice-President spoke about his own narrow escape during one of the explosions. He said the dreadful moments when people struggled to rescue the injured and rushed the critically wounded to hospitals remain among the most painful periods of his life.

He described the chaos that followed the blasts sirens wailing, volunteers and officials working tirelessly, and families desperately searching for their loved ones. The trauma experienced by survivors and victims’ families, he said, can never truly be erased.

“Those horrific explosions left deep scars on countless families,” he noted, adding that the pain of that day is still felt by many who witnessed or were directly affected by the tragedy.

Reaffirming India’s Resolve Against Terrorism

Emphasising the need for unity, the Vice-President urged citizens to reaffirm their collective resolve to stand firmly against terrorism. He stressed that India’s strength lies in its unity, peace and commitment to national integrity.

He called upon people to honour the memory of the victims not only through remembrance but also by upholding the values of harmony and solidarity. According to him, the best tribute to those who lost their lives is a united nation determined to defeat divisive and violent forces.

The Government of India has consistently reiterated its zero-tolerance approach to terrorism.

Remembering the Victims, Supporting the Families

Across Tamil Nadu and other parts of the country, tributes were paid to those who perished in the Coimbatore blasts. Citizens, leaders and organisations remembered the victims with solemn gatherings and messages of solidarity.

The Vice-President underscored the importance of standing by the families who continue to bear the emotional weight of that tragedy. He said their resilience in the face of unimaginable loss remains a testament to the human spirit.

As the nation observes the anniversary, the memory of February 14, 1998, serves as both a warning and a call to action. The Coimbatore blasts remain a stark reminder that vigilance, unity and unwavering commitment to peace are essential to safeguarding India’s future.

In paying homage to the victims, Shri Radhakrishnan’s message echoed a broader national sentiment: terrorism must be confronted with unity, and the sacrifices of innocent lives must never be forgotten.
