Where Is Jagdeep Dhankhar? Opposition Seeks Clarity

RR Team, August 12, 2025August 12, 2025
New Delhi, August 12: A political controversy has erupted after senior Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders questioned the whereabouts and well-being of former Vice President and ex-Rajya Sabha Chairman, Jagdeep Dhankhar. The concerns follow media reports from Telugu outlets claiming that Dhankhar recently met Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a 45-minute private discussion.

Jairam Ramesh Flags Concerns

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh posted on X (formerly Twitter) alleging that Dhankhar has been “missing” from public life since July 21, the day he resigned citing health reasons. He noted that, according to Telugu media, Dhankhar had met the Prime Minister recently, raising questions about the nature of the meeting and his current status.

Shiv Sena (UBT) Writes to Amit Shah

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking clarity on Dhankhar’s health and safety. Raut expressed concern over rumours that the former Vice President has been confined to his residence and is “not safe.” He warned that some Rajya Sabha members were even considering filing a habeas corpus petition in the Supreme Court.

“Where is he? How is his health? Is he safe? The nation deserves to know the truth,” Raut asked in his public statement.

Kapil Sibal Joins the Chorus

On Saturday, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal also questioned Dhankhar’s absence from public engagements, saying it was the first time he had heard of a “laapataa” Vice President, in a play on words referencing the film Laapataa Ladies. Sibal urged the Home Minister to make a formal statement to dispel uncertainty.

Upcoming Vice Presidential Election

The election process for appointing the next Vice President is underway, with voting scheduled for September 9. Dhankhar’s resignation has left the position vacant, prompting speculation and political jibes from opposition parties.

Government Yet to Respond

As of now, the Prime Minister’s Office and the Union Home Ministry have not issued any official clarification regarding Dhankhar’s reported meeting with the PM or the concerns raised about his health and security.

Background on Dhankhar’s Resignation

Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the Vice Presidency on July 21, citing health issues. Prior to becoming Vice President, he served as the Governor of West Bengal and had a long career as a lawyer and politician. His sudden withdrawal from public life has fueled speculation across party lines.
