Dalai Lama Confirms Successor, Rejects China’s Role

RR Team, July 2, 2025July 2, 2025

Dharamshala, India — In a historic announcement ahead of his 90th birthday, the 14th Dalai Lama has confirmed that his spiritual institution will continue beyond his lifetime. He declared that the Gaden Phodrang Trust, the office he established, will be the sole authority to recognize his reincarnation — directly challenging China’s long-standing claim to control the process.

A Landmark Declaration Before Turning 90

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate and globally respected Buddhist monk made the announcement via video during a major gathering of spiritual leaders in Dharamshala. “In response to heartfelt appeals from Tibetans and Buddhists across Asia, I confirm that the institution of the Dalai Lama will continue,” he said.

Followers and analysts call it a pivotal moment in Tibetan history. It signals to both Tibetans and the global Buddhist community that the centuries-old spiritual leadership will endure, even under exile and international political pressure.

China’s Opposition and Historical Context

Reacting sharply, China reiterated that the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama must be “approved by the central government.” Beijing insists the selection must follow a lottery method from a “golden urn” — a Qing dynasty practice. However, many in the Tibetan diaspora view this as state overreach into a religious matter.

China has ruled Tibet since 1950 and denounces the Dalai Lama as a separatist. In contrast, he calls himself “a simple Buddhist monk” who advocates non-violence and greater cultural autonomy for Tibetans.

Reactions from the Tibetan Community

Chemi Lhamo, a Tibetan activist in exile, welcomed the announcement: “It’s a bold step. The Dalai Lama’s message tells China clearly that they have no say in this sacred tradition.” She emphasized the institution’s continuity as a symbol of Tibetan identity and resilience.

Since 1959, after a failed uprising in Lhasa, the Dalai Lama has lived in exile in India. Despite stepping down from political leadership in 2011, his spiritual guidance remains central to the Tibetan cause.

Dalai Lama’s Warning Against Political Exploitation

He reiterated that no external authority — including China — can interfere in identifying the 15th Dalai Lama. “The responsibility lies solely with the Gaden Phodrang Trust,” he said. He also warned that political manipulation of the reincarnation system poses a serious risk to religious sanctity.

What’s Next: Succession and Global Implications

The decision comes at a crucial time, with speculation rising about China potentially announcing its own Dalai Lama figure to solidify its control over Tibet. However, this declaration could unify global Tibetan communities and spiritual followers against such attempts.

The Dalai Lama’s clear stance sets the stage for a tense diplomatic and spiritual confrontation — one that will shape Tibetan identity and geopolitics for years to come.
